Just look up MARSOC on the Marines website, and also check out wikipedia for some additional info. From my understanding all operators with Force Recon went to MARSOC or MSOB(Marine Special Operations Battalion).

There is most definitly force recon. When marsoc was first stood up they took guys from force so for a while force wasn't the same as it used to be, but it's slowly getting back to the way it was. But if you are really serious about doing special forces type stuff my advice is for you to go army and get into the rangers. From there you can go army SF and eventually CAG.

It's a more direct path than MARSOC certainly. Nothing to do with proficiency as an operator.

I was initially told to join the National Guard because they have a SF Unit in my state. But to tell you the truth I want to earn the title MARINE first and foremost. Maybe after my intitial contract is over I'll switch over. My friend who's in there says they love Marines anyways. But i wanna be a Marine. I ship out in two weeks actually to San Francisco. I just wanna Know my options and whats out there because to tell you the truth becoming Force Recon would be Bad A#S

The differences between recon, force recon and MARSOC has been covered recently: http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=100724
It's partially a matter of mission, and more a matter of who they work for. Yes, the higher level the commander that the reconaissance unit works for, the more likelyhood there is that direct action missions may be a focus.

Why are you shipping out to san fransisco? There are only 2 places that train Marines in this country and San Fransisco isnt one of them? I'm not personally Infantry or recon or anything combat related and I respect the fact that the one who are spend long periods of time away from their family and put themseves in danger everyday but why do all these civi's get on here talking about how awesome it would be to be recon or MARSOC. I personally blame Call of Duty for this one. I bet the one's talking about how awesome it would be to be a secret squirrl ninja would be the first ones soiling themselves when they step on the yellow footprints. I don't mean this to be rude but their are way to many people who are wannabe's on here. How about earning the title first.

I hear its alot of Humping over hill after hill with 100 plus pound packs. I've done my home work i just want to know the nature of the options i have. and if Recon or MARSOC is one of them i'd like to know more about them from someone other than a recruiter ya know. i dont even play call of duty
